Nation's Capitol Chapter

Welcome to the new Academic year at the University of Idaho.  I am excited that the University continues to prosper.  Accordingly, the newest edition of the Alumni Association's e-newsletter 'Vandal Vibe', Alumni Director Steve Johnson reports:

  • New freshman enrollments are 1.4 percent, compared to this time last year.
  • New graduate enrollments are up 2 percent.
  • New non-degree student enrollments are up 19.1 percent.
  • Enrollment at the Coeur d'Alene Center is up 18.7 percent.
  • Total students-of-color enrollment is up 3.75 percent.

Most of our colleges have increased in new students as well.  For example:

  • The College of Agriculture and Life Sciences is up 10 percent;
  • The College of Art and Architecture is up 18 percent;
  • The College of Business and Economics is up 4 percent;
  • The College of Natural Resources is up 6 percent;
  • The College of Science is up 2.6 percent.

The incoming freshman class has incredible scholarship and leadership characteristics:

  • More then 865 freshman- just over half of the accepted freshman- qualified for our new Go Idaho!  Program, with a GPA greater then 3.5;
  • 14 are new National Merit Scholars, which matches last year's record number;
  • More students this year (111) qualified as Presidential Scholars (these students boast at least a 3.5 GPA and an ACT score greater than 30);
  • 61 students accepted our prestigious Leadership Scholarship, up from 40 last year (these students have been president of their high school class or honor society).

Think about what that means for the future of the University of Idaho.

Sincerely,

Kay Bacharach
